Although it has been much debated, the name Level 42 came originally from the answer to life, the universe and everything, in Douglas Adams’ novel The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, and the word “Level” was simply added by the record company to make the name more distinctive. Level 42 were formed in 1980 as a jazz-funk fusion band. They were signed to a small independent record label, released the single “Love Meeting Love” and were subsequently signed to Polydor Records. Their fourth album Standing in the Light generated their first chart success in the UK The Sun Goes Down (Living It Up) The single was released in 1983 and attained number 10 in the UK charts.
