Although it has been much debated, the name Level 42 came originally from the answer to life, the universe and everything, in Douglas Adams’ novel The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, and the word “Level” was simply added by the record company to make the name more distinctive. Level 42 were formed in 1980 as a jazz-funk fusion band. They were signed to a small independent record label, released the single “Love Meeting Love” and were subsequently signed to Polydor Records. Their fourth album Standing in the Light generated their first chart success in the UK The Sun Goes Down (Living It Up) The single was released in 1983 and attained number 10 in the UK charts. Elton John was born Reginald Kenneth Dwight in Pinner, England on March 25, 1947. In 1960, Reginald formed a band called the Corvettes with some of his friends. This band evolved and became Bluesology. By the mid-1960s, Bluesology was backing other artists such as the Isley Brothers, Major Lance, Doris Troy, and Patti LaBelle. Reginald left the band to pursue a solo career and answered an advertisement by Liberty Records. It was here that he made contact with Bernie Taupin and began writing music to Bernie’s lyrics. Thus began a partnership that continues to this day. Reginald Dwight changed his name to Elton John, and is one of the most successful solo artists in music history. Rocket Man (I Think It’s Going To Be A Long, Long Time) was released in 1972 on the album Honky Chateau. Download a free midi file of Rocket Man by Elton John Filed under: Elton John |

Louis Armstrong was born to a poor family in New Orleans, Louisiana. In 1922 he was invited by Joe “King” Oliver to join his Creole Jazz Band. Armstrong made his first recordings playing second cornet in Oliver’s band in 1923. During his long career he played and sang with the most important instrumentalists and vocalists including Jimmie Rodgers, Bing Crosby, Duke Ellington, Fletcher Henderson, Bessie Smith, and Ella Fitzgerald. Also known for his gravelly voice, Armstrong recorded and released What A Wonderful World in 1968. It topped the British charts for a month but did not chart at all in America at that time. The song was used in the 1987 movie Good Morning Vietnam, and this re-release saw it top the charts around the world.
