Roberta Flack was the daughter of a church organist. She played piano and got a music scholarship and a music degree from Howard University. She spent some time teaching, then was discovered singing at a club by Les McCann and was signed to the Atlantic record label.This song was a huge hit for Roberta in 1973. It was supposedly written about the singer-songwriter Don Mclean.
